when in willits
We left the McCloud River area a few days ago, and wandered along in the general direction of the redwood coast. Our path led us through the town of Willits, and back to the Phoenix Bread Company – a bakery that my friend and I discovered on last year’s journey.
We were hoping to score some of the very fine Blackberry Turnovers that we enjoyed so much last time through the area (see above). Indeed, we did stock up on a few, along with some other choice items – two kinds of foccaccia – one with tomatoes, olives and thinly sliced lemon, and another with blue cheese and basil leaves (see below). Wow! We were feeling well-provisioned as we continued north into the redwoods. That evening, after setting up camp at Richardson Grove, we placed slices of the foccaccia on foil next to the fire and let them bake a short while. Mmm…..life was seeming to be pretty good.
Turned out, we weren’t the only ones to enjoy the foccaccia. While we were sitting by the fire, someone discovered and snagged the remaining slices of the blue cheese foccaccia sitting on the picnic table behind our backs. It was a white cat — without any doubt, one of the four somewhat feral kittens that we discovered hanging out in the bushes behind last year’s campsite. Of course, we figured that they wouldn’t fare too well in the coming winter. Not so, it seems. By the end of last evening, we had established that at least two of the kittens – now grown into cats – are inhabiting the bushes around the campsites. Obviously, they’re a lot more resourceful than we might have guessed.

I’m enjoying your journey very much, bev. I love seeing the old places where Roger and I often traveled, many years ago. How cool that those feral cats survive. They must be very smart and fast. There are plenty of predators in those woods that would love to make a meal of them. That foccaccia looks delicious.

Ha! So you must have forgot your knife! That’s ok, a hatchet will cut stuff up too! And you have more fun! Did you see the Castle Crags(Well, not sure what they’re actually called, maybe those are near Hollister), they’re west of I-5 near Shasta, they’re a lot more visible as you go north tho for I-5. There’s a state park there, Ive always wanted to go stop there…but when the hubby gets driving, he’s gottat get where he wants to go! Beautiful bugs too!
