Black-horned Tree Cricket (Oecanthus nigricornis) – © Bev Wigney
Yesterday, I posted a link to my op-ed on the “silent summer of insects” which was just published on Saltwire. Since beginning to write about this topic a couple of weeks ago, I’ve received a terrific amount of feedback from people all over the continent and beyond. It is becoming quite apparent that I am not alone in feeling that there is something very odd happening with insect numbers this year. Many have been finding the lack of insects to be so conspicuous that they have taken to spending time observing what were formerly busy flower patches, only to find that there is little to no insect activity.
This morning, I was alerted to a very interesting post written by Lisa Rainsong, on her “Listening In Nature” blog. Over time, she has made some very careful observations of the activity and sounds of a number of species of crickets and grasshoppers on her property. She writes that this year has been different. How different? Read this blog post to find out more. Great observations and photos.
