first dragonfly
We were quite surprised to find our first dragonfly of the season while there is still a bit of snow on the ground. It was perched on an Artist’s Conk (Ganoderma applanatum) fungi at Baird Woods in Lanark. Looks a bit like a Sympetrum, but it’s a little large and really too early in the season (click on photo for a larger view).

What a SPECTACULAR photo, Bev.
I am constantly amazed at how frequently you go on local excursions. I am fully expecting to bump into you in the streets of Perth anytime soon!

Yes, isn’t it? My husband says that we should name this species Sympetrum plasticum. (-:
And yes, we’re often out and about on trails throughout the region. We spend all of our spare time hiking and observing nature. We’ve been doing that for many years – going back to many of the same places a few times each year. It’s quite interesting how you can visit a place time after and time and always find something new.

I agree that it looks a bit like a Sympetrum; a Sympetrum plasticum! I’m sure you were absolutely thrilled by this unexpected surprise. A very rare species, I’m sure!!
Good try, Bev! The joke is on us!!
Thanks for the laugh,
Debbie
