a special day
Today is a special day for a couple of reasons. For one thing, it’s Don’s birthday. That’s a photo of us taken a very long time ago. That’s Frisky sitting beside Don. She was the dog that I grew up with. And yes, that’s me when my hair was slowly turning from blonde to brown. It’s very dark now, but that’s beginning to change a little too. And there we are, digging around in the earth, doing pretty much the same kind of thing we’ve been doing for the past thirty or so years.
Today is also special for another reason — because it’s the date of my parents’ anniversary. That’s them on the left (click on photo for larger view). As you’ll know from reading my blog, my dad passed away eight years ago. Although she doesn’t ever leave a comment here, my mom reads this blog each day and will probably get a surprise when she sees herself here today.
Through an interesting coincidence, Don was born on the same day that my parents were married. I’ve always thought that was rather cool. It’s almost like he was some kind of future present — perhaps like a bottle of wine — that was kept at a secret location, aging for twenty or so years, before being handed over.
Plenty of time has flown by since then. Another five dogs have shared our lives and now it’s Sabrina who keeps us company as we dig around in the garden. Rather than thinking of ourselves as older, I prefer to think in terms of wiser, more experienced, aged, and a lot more mellow. Mellow is good. (-:
Happy birthday, Don!

Happy birthday Don! I love the pictures and the laid back style of our generation in the 70’s. Even the dog is smiling.

Happy birthday to Don! Today is my youngest nephew’s birthday. Eli turns 17. Woohoo. It is a special day. I love the idea of Don being a future present. Yes, I believe you have that right.
You two look so cute in that pic. You look recognizable to me, like kindred spirits. I am surprised by all that blond hair. How interesting that it turned brown after you were already an adult. Your parents look so happy, like beautiful newlyweds.
Hello to Bev’s mom.

Awwww. The coincidences, the smiling attractive faces – and of course a happy dog, one in a long line of continued caring and sharing. It’s all part of the tale of lives lived well, lived in love. Happy Birthday to Don! May it be the beginning of a year of health and happiness. And to Mom – may it be a day of happy memories.

Happy birthday, Don! Celebrate! And greetings to Bev’s mom…I’m glad you read Bev’s blog every day…keep it up!
Bev, I would never have guessed you were once blonde. That’s another reason to visit your blog frequently…learn something new every day. With your blog, that’s really true…I learn something new…not just every day, every visit!
You all should celebrate for the next week…make it good!

On behalf of Don, thanks everyone!
–
Ruth – It’s interesting — I was thinking the same thing about the 70s… it was a really nice, laid back time in so many ways.
–
Robin – Tonight, my mom said she liked the idea of Don being like a future present and she’s always thing it was really neat that he was born on their wedding day. My hair was very blonde when I was a kid, but it gradually started to grow darker about the time I was 14 or so. I did use some kind of lightener on it for awhile, but eventually let it grow in dark.
–
Cathy – Nice coincidences and it seems that our lives have been well lived. (-:
–
John – It feels a little odd to me to see myself blonde in these old photos — almost a bit as though I’m looking at someone else, which is actually kind of fun. We do intend to do a bit of celebrating, if that includes getting out hiking! We’ll probably be doing a bit of that over the weekend!
