big mess!
All,
Well, this morning, I found that the “error” message was still there — just a small line saying “error 127, blah, blah, blah”.
Although my instincts told me, “Don’t do anything and just wait for it to go away!” I decided to run the database repair function and see if it would help.
Guess what?
Now I have a BIG MESS up at the top of the screen.
Guess I’ll have to work on this some more this morning. Maybe just “restore” the database to the last version saved. I’m not sure if I’ll lose yesterday’s post, but I guess we’ll see.
Anyhow, in the meantime, just try to ignore the BIG MESS at the top of the screen and I’ll see what I can do about it this morning.
It’s possible that the blog will be down for awhile depending on what happens.
(Btw, I am not a happy camper right now).

Well, it still works, at least.
It’s very strange how you can do nothing to cause things like this and you get the creeping suspicion that mutations have somehow crept in.

Wayne – Yes, I’m glad it’s still working. It still looks “fine” to me when I’m logged in, but when I log out and look at it, I can see the big mess. I can “restore” it to my last back up, but unfortunately, it has the original error in it and I’ll lose the comments from the latest post. I’ll work at this a bit more and if I can’t figure it out, I guess I’ll go the “restore” route and hope that something even worse doesn’t happen. Probably should have left it as it was before the “repair” and just waiting to see if it eventually went away. *sigh*
Anyhow, be prepared for the possibility of something…ahem… catastrophic occurring if all of this repair and restoration work just messes things up further. Well, at least I have the original posts in html which could be posted in order again to create a new version of Burning Silo if it ever came to that, but I don’t even like to think about that horrendous possibility. yuck!

Hi Bev, remember to do a SQL database backup before you do anything! It will make it a whole lot easier to restore posts should anything happen. Yahoo has some decent support, see if they can help if you haven’t asked already. They have responded to me within 24 hours each time, and since the blog still works despite the mess maybe you can hold out that long.

Hi Peter – I made a backup yesterday before I realized there was stuff going wrong, so I’m backed up to there. I have some stuff to work on this morning, but later today, I’ll try to pursue this problem further. I think yesterday’s backup could be used to overwrite this latest mess, but it is probably buggy. Good to hear that you’ve been able to get some support from Yahoo. If I don’t figure this out later today, I’ll see if they can help. As for the blog, it’s still functioning despite the error warnings across the top, so I’ll just live with it for now. Hopefully everyone else doesn’t mind and will just read on and ignore the mess! Heh heh. I hadn’t noticed the small error message before, but I see this. What I had noticed before was an error message all by itself on a blank page before the Web page loaded. Now I don’t get that initial error messsage.
There is a bug somewhere, and you must be making it mad.
November 15th, 2006 at 1:52 pm
I’ll try a comment again. The first one didn’t take, at least as far as I can see.

Mark – Well, that’s interesting about the error message on the blank page before. Do you use RSS to get here? Maybe that’s why you were getting that message — Gin mentioned something about people with feeds maybe not getting here. As for making the bug mad, it’s beginning to make *me* mad too! >:-0
I think I may just see if I can get some support help for this one as I don’t think I can fix it. Hopefully it’s something minor that someone who knows what they’re doing can fix in a few minutes.

Mark – The blog seems to be slow in adding comments today. Not sure why, but it does behave that way from time to time.
November 15th, 2006 at 4:07 pm
Bev – I also noticed that BS was quite slow in coming up and in adding comments, now that you mention it.
I did not come in through RSS, if that helps (although I wearily acknowledge all sorts of problems that come about when people do come in that way!)

So sorry to hear and see these problems, Bev. Yesterday it looked better when I stopped in I don’t come in via RSS feed, but now that Mark mentions it, I do remember seeing a blank page with an error message before the blog page would load. I don’t remember if the error message was visible on top of the blog page until just the other day, but the blank error page started showing up a little while ago. More than a week or so, but I can’t remember how much more than that. Good luck with it.

Errors are gone now? :-) Looking good to me, hope it is permanent for your sanity!
November 15th, 2006 at 6:43 pm
Really? I’ll have to go check! I just sent an email off to Yahoo about 5 minutes ago. Wonder if they fixed it or if the blog just “got well” on its own?
November 15th, 2006 at 6:47 pm
It wouldn’t surprise me if they fixed it, and you will be getting a e-mail reply shortly. Or thats some very interesting timing!

yahoo!???
November 15th, 2006 at 8:26 pm
Yahoo!! is exactly right! You can’t imagine how *glad* I am that the problem appears to have been resolved. I was definitely not looking forward to having to deal with this thing as I was concerned about losing some or all of the blog and comments.
November 15th, 2006 at 9:50 pm
Yes, it looks great from here. Other than that your last comment is 8:26pm and it’s now 4:49pm. :-)
Something else to agonize over!
November 15th, 2006 at 9:50 pm
Ahh! I see. Looks like it’s a UT thing.
November 15th, 2006 at 11:00 pm
Wayne – Yes, I guess it is the UT thing. I’ve never changed it. Now, quite frankly, I’m terrified to change ANYTHING! I deactivated my stats counter this afternoon, and I’m afraid that if I activate it again, the blog might start to screw up again. Think I’ll leave it for a day or two and just enjoy some peace of mind for awhile. (-:

Opps !!!
I confess to being the reader who first brought this to your attention via an email and this tale of woe makes me feel guilty. But then I am a damned librul and am supposed to feel guilty!
The problem appears gone and may it stay that way.
Hopefully you will heal quickly and be able to swim in these waters again real soon.
November 16th, 2006 at 6:37 pm
gardenguy – Not a problem!! Don’t be at all concerned. It was just as well that you said something in the first place as I had no idea that the RSS feed was acting up and that people were getting error messages. At least it all seems to be fixed now — thank goodness! (-:
