redwood soup

Well, I have finally managed to make it back here to post something again. Oddly enough, it seems that I just get time to write about food and not much else. Not sure what the significance of that might be other than that we’ve been eating pretty well while on the road. Seems that part of each day is devoted to creating good food. I enjoy camp cooking either over a camp stove or fire and have been trying out some new ideas for recipes. Last night, I made a big batch of vegetable soup over the camp stove. We felt like something warm as the air temperature in the evening has been cool these last few nights. If you want a better idea of how it felt to be standing beside the stove while the soup was cooking away, check out this little video clip. That’s my voice just at the tail end.
The soup was cooked beneath the sheltering of redwoods. Ingredients included an onion, red potatoes, swedish turnip, baby carrots, celery, zucchini, chopped Roma tomatoes, cauliflower, asparagus, a small can of tomato juice, a little salt and a tablespoon of whole seed european type prepared mustard. Most of the ingredients were purchased at a little whole food store that we found while wandering around yesterday afternoon.
In other news from the road, we’ve been having a good time. Have met some fun and interesting people. Bought some cool rocks from a really neat woman of the west who sells vegetables, flowers and rocks at her little roadside garden.
Well, I see my battery is running outta juice on the laptop, so have to cut this kinda short. Will try to post again sometime soon. Take care all — we’re doing well.

    Looks bubbly and delicious, Bev.

I don’t travel much, but when I do, cooking and eating is a comfort and reminder of home, somehow.

That does look delicious, bev. What a fine pot of soup out there under the redwoods. Yum.

Hi Laura and Robin – Just checking in from along the road and glad to see that you’ve had a chance to see the soup. Yesterday was a batch of vegetarian burritos. The food has been good and the scenery along the way even better. Lots to write about whenever I have some time online, but that has been very limited at best — using WiFi connections found by driving around small towns — usually coffeeshops where we stop and buy a couple of things and send off a few emails to friends and family. Good way to keep in touch and practically the only way these days. We don’t have cellphones and we’ve found that most towns don’t have phone booths anymore. They’re there, but the phones have usually been ripped out. Apparently, so few booths are being used these days that the phone companies are removing them. Guess it’s a sign of the times. Well, I have some more stuff to take care of while online, so back to work. I will be “back home” in about 2 weeks — Don has decided to take a week off of work and fly out here to see the west (his first trip to the west coast), so I’m extending my stay a little. I have a feeling I’ll be ready to come home when it comes time to fly back east. I expect I’ll have missed the best of the autumn leaves for this year, but at least I got to spend some time among the redwoods and the madrones.

Sounds like it’s been a blast, and a long one at that. Two more weeks!

The dinner looks great – all my favorites, and I have to admit the soup mode always appeals to me. Glad you didn’t add okra.

And the video clip was a lot of fun. Watching soup boil!

Good to hear that Don will be able to join you for a week.

We’ve just begun using a camp stove much like yours. Nice to have a hot meal when in the woods.

Wayne – I love almost all vegetables, but okra definitely isn’t one of them, so you’ll never find it in my soup!
I’m glad that I thought of photographing our meals while on the road. It’s been fun looking back at the images and the boiling soup .mp4 turned out so well that I’ll probably shoot more like it in future as it really captures the mood of how it was around our campsite in the evenings.

pablo – This kind of camp stove works out very well. I’ve been able to get things set up and have a hot meal ready in a half-hour or so on many an evening.
