sage finds a new friend 11 comments
Relatively speaking, this may seem like a flurry of posts! I’m even working on another to put up sometime soon.
We have a new addition to the family – a Talavera ceramic rattlesnake from Mexico. Some of you may remember that we were joined by a coyote last winter and he now resides at Round Hill. The new rattler will likely be found in the garden by the front doorstep when we return for the summer!
Of course, Sage, being her usual curious self, had to check out the newcomer. And here she is, giving it her seal of approval!

Beautiful! And big!

The rattlesnake’s expression is that of one who is charmed by Sage’s curiosity and approval! I was thinking the snake might be something you had carved.
Wonderful to see all that wood in your winter home. I was picturing adobe until I saw these photos (-:

I don’t suppose Sage will become a crotalaphore, as marigold is a confirmed lagophore, with her stuffed bunny friend.

OK. That is adorable. Sweet Sage. Has Sabrina made friends with Mr. Snake, yet 🙂

am – I love the rattlesnake’s expression – so benign and expectant! The bedroom where I sleep is the only room in the house that is finished in cedar — the rest of the walls throughout the house are plastered. This room has a wood ceiling with beams and skylights made of stained glass in designs made like native indian blankets. It is sunken 3 steps below the rest of the house and always makes me think of going down into a hogan. It feels safe and peaceful to me.

fred – I don’t think there’s much chance — she seems more into just looking rather than touching. The rough collies tend to be that way – they rarely touch any creature – just look at it from a few inches away.

Cathy – Sabrina gave it a brief look, but hasn’t got the same interest in objects. Sage is much more interested in shapes of objects, seeming to believe that they might be creatures. -
I like the rattler. We have a resin lizard from around Albuquerque, probably made in Mexico, which has hung on the front of our house for a long time. It had to be removed for some renovation work, and our dog was very interested in it, at least until he had a chance to sniff it.

Hi Bev
I love the expression on the snake it is quite sweet. Sage must be very brave to get that close. All the best for the holidays and in the new year.

I love the colors, Bev, so vibrant they almost jump off the screen!

Mark – It’s funny how some objects will attract the interest of some animals. I have my mom a little stuffed javelina toy last year as she always wondered what a javelina looked like. Her dalmatian often studies the toy which is sitting well up above floor level. I can just imagine what would happen if the dog ever got up close to it!

Guy – I love the snake’s expression – you’re right – so sweet. All the best to you too for the holidays and the coming year!

Cate – I really love the colours of the Talavera ceramics. Last year, when I put the coyote in the garden, it just drew the eye in such a neat way. Looking forward to adding the snake this year. I may try to bring back a large iguana and possibly a Day of the Dead pot — the van is so cramped that it’s hard to do though – and much as these ceramics are beautiful, they are also quite fragile and very easily broken!
Love the colors on that rattler.
