right on time

Yesterday, I saw the first Black Swallowtail butterflies (Papilio polyxenes) of the season. The one above was resting on some muddy tire tracks in the lane just outside my house this afternoon (click on above image for larger view). I found a second one flying in a meadow beside the poplar and birch wood lot. Although the date seemed a little early, I checked my notes for 2006 and discovered that last year, the first Black Swallowtail made an appearance here at the farm on May 4th. So, we’re either a little late, or perhaps last year was a little early and we’re actually right on time.

Nice one Bev, swallowtails are real eye catchers.

What a beauty. When the butterflies are out the way they are here now, I trust that spring has really arrived.

I saw my first one two days ago. But I may have missed earlier ones.
