some news

Those who know me well, also know that I’m rather pathetic at blowing my own horn. I’m very shy and incredibly uncomfortable about talking up what I do — not exactly a useful characteristic for a person who should be doing more to promote her nature photography. So, in the interest of doing some shameless self-promotion, I just wanted to say that I’ve just received a copy of the new book on the Misumena vatia spider, Predator Upon A Flower, by Douglass H. Morse. That’s one of my spider photos on the book jacket. I haven’t had time to read much of the book yet, but it seems very interesting and I’ve already learned a few things. There’s also quite a good chapter on Xysticus crab spiders. I’ve been trying to find out more about them as I see a lot of them around here guarding egg cases. Apparently, the largest ones are Xysticus emertoni, which is what I suspected – so I think maybe those are the species I’ve been seeing and photographing. I’ll post a more complete review of the book after I have some time to do more reading.

Yesterday, I also just received a copy of the new Kaufman Field Guide to Insects of North America. I have a few small photos in that as well.

So there you go – my first attempt at shameless self-promotion. I promise not to do this too often. (-:

Hey, congratulations, Bev! I know that I would be very pleased to have any of my photos used in a book.

Your photos have been an inspration to me — keep up the good work!

Hi Bev you don’t know me, but I wanted to say congrats on your great looking photo without it I would not know what a crab spider looks like even if it bit me! Be proud of your success.
I do like your photos and blog – are you planning any hiking or canoeing trips to blog about this summer?
I am doing research for Ontario Trails Council [OTC] and interested in discovering new places to visit.
    Cheers

Go ahead and blow your horn! More people need to notice your fine work, both in photography and writing.

Larry – Thanks very much – especially if my photos have been an inspiration. That I like to hear! (-:

Sonja – Thanks. I’m glad to know that you have become more acquainted with what a crab spider looks like. We’ll probably be doing a lot of hiking and canoeing this summer. At this point, we have no particular routes planned, but we try to spend every spare minute out hiking or paddling somewhere. I will probably write about most of our trips on my blog. We’ve done a lot of hiking here in eastern Ontario, but would like to do more up in the more northerly parts of the province. That might well happen this summer.

Ruth – Thanks very much for saying so! I’m trying to do a little more horn-blowing lately, so perhaps that will help bring a bit more attention to the photos and writing.

    Congratulations, Bev!

That is a great photo for that book; a sweet, candy-coloured spider gnawing on an unfortunate bee.

I just wrote, finally, a couple of spider incidents (Sleeping with Tarantulas) I had promised ‘way back in March, after you asked about fear of spiders.

  12. Ontario Wanderer Says:

I too would like to add my congratulations on your being published. From the photos that I have seen you put up on your web, I think you may have more offers in the future. I am envious of your ability to find and photographically capture the small.

    Congrats!

Bev! Congratulations! It’s beautiful. I’m so glad you dropped in on my blog. I’m sorry you’re under some stress – I hope you’ll fill us in when it feels right to do so. In the meantime I’m sending along a hug and want you to know I’m thinking about you and wishing you the very best.

Bev, that’s terrific! You’re so incredibly talented, you deserve all the recognition and more, a lot more! Shameless self-promotion is absolutely appropriate when what you’re promoting is of superb quality. Congratulations.

That’s wonderful news! I’ve been admiring your photos for quite a while now. You’re really fantastic, and I’m glad you’re getting some recognition.

Everyone – Thank you very much! As I mentioned above, I’m somewhat uncomfortable about self-promotion, but this feels more like sharing good news with friends. (-:

Hi! more woohoo!!! for your photo publication!! It looks like an intriguing book–from the odd title (spider fitness?!) to the wonderfully gory picture of a spider munching up a bee, can’t wait to read your review. Do you know the author?

I know (just on looking at the cover) that I bet kids would love this book. Especially if it had lots of your great bug pix–even (especially) the ones with all the bloody details. Kids eat this stuff up–Nature with fangs and poison.

  19. bev Says:

Hi Celeste. Thanks! The book is very interesting — actually just a few ink drawing illustrations, but the text is good – a sort of blend of facts and figures presented within an interesting narrative. I will write a review as soon as things settle down a little around here. Btw, no I don’t know the author.

  20. Marcia Bonta Says:

No need to apologize for blowing your horn. I was happy to learn about your accomplishments in two fine books.
